The Start of an Idea

While at a local gig this week I got into a conversation with one of the bands playing. They are known as Treacle People and play dance rock music and are based in Norwich. I spoke to one of the Guitarists Lawrence and he expressed an interest in the band have an animated music video for their song 'Something Wicked This Way Comes'. Not only did I really enjoy that song in particular but I have wanted to work on a music video for a number of years now (it was music videos such as Royal Blood's 'Out of the Black' and Arctic Monkey's 'Do I Wanna Know?" which really inspired me to look into animation in the first place) therefore I was very excited to be asked to take on this project as a freelance animator and artist.

Straight away I asked Lawrence what kind of style of animation they were looking for (I warned him that it wouldn't be a 'Paranoid Android' situation as that is just in my preferred art style. He expressed an interest in the idea of rotoscoping, something which I have been meaning to look into again since my Expressions in Animation work from way back in first year of my degree. I showed him this short animation from years ago and he said that it was the kind of style they wanted but darker and more moody. This peaked my interest straight away so I asked the band to put together a Pinterest mood board of the kind of art and animations they were interested in. I also asked them to send over some of their favourite music videos so I could get idea of how they would like their video to be edited and produced.
