Rotoscoped videos and consideration of music
Started looking at other animated videos, I focused on rotoscopes in particular but I also want to look into the edits of these videos and how they compliment the song through their creative choices.
As much as AHA's 'Take on Me' is an obvious place to start when it comes to researching rotoscoping it is one of the most famous rotoscoped videos of all time and therefore needs to be be mentioned. This video was groundbreaking for its time and is one of the reasons this song became so well known and remains to be one of those songs everyone knows the words to. The romantic plot point was also very effective and complimentary to the songs lyrics.
Fight Like Apes 'Tie me up with jackets' is one of my all time favourite music videos. The style of art and the choppy edits really work with the song and the aesthetic of the band. I also really like the way that ink is animated in this video which may help me when considering the Rorschach elements in my own work.
Although these two videos are not rotoscoped, I think the are both great examples of how animation can compliment a song. The White Stripes 'Fell in love with a girl" music video helped them to land their first taste of commercial success. The video is absolutely on point aesthetically, it follows the black, red and white colour scheme of the band and helps to push the brand further. Moreover the simplicity of the shapes and movements mirror the simplicity of the song itself.
On the other end of the spectrum we have Arctic Monkey's 'Do I wanna know' music video which focuses on the waving melody of the song and shows it in the simplistic and psychedelic animation, using unorthodox edits which sway with the song. Much like in this video, I intend to keep my work simple in black and white until the song builds up, which is when I will add colour. Aesthetically, this piece and my own are very similar.
This is a video I found recently, and although it is very different aesthetically, the editing and rotoscoping in this video are both things I will be watching closely as I feel it has been done very effectively. This video was created by over 60 artists and was edited together to make a coherent music video which works perfectly with the song, the different styles of animation really work to emphasise different elements of the song. This is similar to want I want to do with my animation where the animation changes gradually to fit with the song as it builds up.
Although Gorillaz 'Feel Good Inc' is not entirely rotoscoped, there are parts of which definitely are, such as the close ups of the instruments being played, which are seamless. What I like about the video is how the art style is correlated with the animation. I chose to do rotoscope so I could focus on the art within the piece, so this is a very nice example of how it can be done.
